Sometimes we think this old bird has a mind of it's own but instead of repairing herself like Christine, she instead seems to say, "Nope, I'm tired!" and spits some gear oil on the garage floor in protest.

When we last left you we had done some work on the complex hydraulic and electrical system that controls the convertible top. All the old hydraulic hoses were replaced and, except for one deck lid cylinder that began leaking past its seal (requiring replacement), we were about ready to install new trunk mats.

It was while cycling the top and making adjustments that the hydraulic pump decided it had had enough.

Though it was completely dead at the switch, with power applied directly to the motor we were able to get it to spin slowly for just a second.

The pump was removed and disassembled on the bench to see if we could find the problem. Aside from the automatic transmission fluid that normally flows through the system, we found gelatinous sludge in the reservoir.

One big leak would likely be followed by others later if we tried to repair it. And old school radiator shops are a thing of the past around here. Replacement copper radiators for a '63 Thunderbird are currently stupid, stupid, stupid expensive. Almost double the price of just a year ago.

Other faults, like corrosive resistance at a connection, an open circuit, or short circuit to ground somewhere can take time.

The '63 T-Bird came in with a couple of blown fuses and no dash illumination or working turn signals. Someone had cut off connectors inside the doors for the courtesy lights and we even discovered a ground wire for the headlights connected to power at the starter relay. So, there were some weird things.

While the dash was apart, we replaced fuses and everything tested okay and worked fine. But as soon as things were fully reassembled, the fuse for the turn signals blew again.

Somewhere between the fuse panel and the turn signal switch we had a direct short to ground. We disconnected the turn signal switch from the harness to rule out anything going on inside the steering column. A test light at the fuse panel indicated there was still a short.

Power travels from the fuse panel to and through the turn signal flasher and then on to the switch. The flasher is inconveniently clipped into the back of one of the gauge pods, so the pod was removed (again) for access.

Once the flasher was unclipped from the pod, the test light went out - the short was gone. It turns out, even though the flasher worked, power inside was being short circuited to the metal case. As soon as the unit was clipped into place on the back of the dash it was grounded to the chassis which, in turn, blew the fuse - as it should. All it took was a new flasher from the parts store. and the gremlin was eliminated.

And then there are parts, like shock absorbers, that you wouldn't think would be all that special. Turns out the front shocks were a one year only deal. Everything before and after 1963 is completely different. What the parts houses sell for a '63 won't fit at all. After some research we found a shock (KYB 31125) for a different application that will bolt-on and work with only a minor modification.

The rears were a similar story. What's currently sold as a replacement will physically bolt on but we determined it doesn't have the proper travel - about 2-3" too short. So we find something longer (Monroe 31125) that was actually used on 1955-1960 T-Birds.

The '63 Thunderbird sat for a long time and we're finding evidence of decay and signs of neglect in a past life - which, in many cases, is to be expected. We wonder what stories this old drop-top bird would tell, if it could. Kudos to the current owner for wanting to get her back…
